  1. I bought my first trekking poles in a mountaineering store in Boulder Colorado during the mid to late 1990s. They were a pair of Leki Tour Light poles, made of metal with crummy plastic grips. My tour lights have seen a lot of use and still work, but I’ve always hated the grips, and I decided to upgrade.

The grips on my new poles are very nice. The strap is nicer too. All in all, this is a much more comfortable experience just because of those two things.

These poles have an anti-shock system as well. There is only a tiny amount of play in the tip, so I can honestly say I don’t actively notice the anti-shock. I’ve only gone a couple of miles with them but I didn’t notice any strain from jarring impacts on rocks.

The last great thing about these is their lightness. I’m very happy with how light they are.

The only problem is that the insides of the tubes are so smooth that the twist lock mechanism doesn’t bite as well as I’m used too on my older poles. I’m pretty certain that a few more trips will accumulate enough dirt inside them that they should grip better, and then they’ll be perfect.
